What is the Child Safety Pledge?

The Child Safety Pledge is a commitment made by individuals or organizations to prioritize the safety and well-being of children in their care. The pledge typically includes a set of guidelines or principles that outline the steps that the individual or organization will take to protect children from harm.

The Child Safety Pledge may include a variety of commitments, such as ensuring that children are always supervised by responsible adults, maintaining safe and secure facilities, implementing policies and procedures to prevent abuse and neglect, conducting thorough background checks on staff and volunteers, and providing ongoing training on child safety and protection.

The Child Safety Pledge is often used by organizations that work with children, such as schools, childcare centers, youth sports leagues, and non-profit organizations. By making the pledge, these organizations demonstrate their commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment for children in their care.

Safe Adults

The term “safe adult” generally refers to an adult who is deemed trustworthy, responsible, and capable of providing a safe and supportive environment for children. This term is often used in the context of child welfare and protection and may be used by organizations and certification programs that work with children.

The specific meaning of “safe adult” may vary depending on the organization or program using the term, but in general, a safe adult is someone who:

Has undergone a background check and is free from any history of abuse or neglect.

Has received training in child safety and protection, including recognizing signs of abuse, reporting suspected abuse, and creating a safe and supportive environment for children.

Demonstrates a commitment to the safety and well-being of children and is willing to take appropriate action to protect children from harm.

Safe adults may be parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, or other adults who work with children. They play an important role in creating a safe and nurturing environment for children and may be responsible for ensuring that children are supervised, protected from harm, and provided with emotional support and guidance.

Not all Esports Coaches Are Safe Adults

Esports coaches are responsible for guiding and coaching young players in a competitive and often high-pressure environment. At Esports Tower, we take that responsibility very seriously as we know all our coaches, community managers and program directors have the potential to influence the lives of these young players in many positive ways, such as by teaching teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. However, if unchecked, these positions of influence can be harmful too.

To be considered a safe adult in the context of esports coaching, the coach should have undergone a background check to ensure that they have no history of abuse or neglect. Additionally, they should have received training on child safety and protection and demonstrated a commitment to the safety and well-being of their players. This may include implementing policies and procedures to prevent abuse and neglect, and creating a safe and supportive environment for players to learn and compete.

It’s important for esports organizations and teams to take steps to ensure that their coaches are safe adults and that they provide a safe environment for young players. This can include having clear policies and procedures in place for reporting abuse or neglect, conducting regular background checks on coaches and staff, and providing ongoing training on child safety and protection.

Conclusion

In conclusion, parents should take the necessary steps to ensure that their child’s esports coach is a safe adult before entrusting them with their child’s well-being even if the training is conducted virtually. This can include asking the coach about their background, qualifications, and experience working with children, as well as verifying their credentials and conducting their own background check if necessary.

Additionally, parents should make sure that the esports center, organization or team has policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety and well-being of young players. Examples include thorough background checks and ongoing screening, along with codes that govern their coaching program.

By taking these steps, parents can help ensure that their child is in the care of a safe and responsible adult who can guide and support them in their esports journey.
