Opportunities for Women in Gaming

Women in gaming are gaining new ground in an industry dominated by men.

For those aspiring to embark on a career in esports gaming, the industry presents numerous opportunities, but not without its challenges. As someone passionate about video gaming, I’ve often been met with surprises and misconceptions about my chosen profession. It’s a common assumption that roles in marketing or HR are the typical avenues for women in the gaming industry. However, times are changing, and while representation can still be improved, women are making strides in game development.

From my own experiences, there have been instances where I’ve been the sole female presence in core development teams. But these experiences only fuel my motivation to guide and inspire others who wish to carve out their path in esports gaming. I encourage everyone, irrespective of gender, to pursue their gaming aspirations. In particular, I want to be a beacon of inspiration for women aiming to break into esports and gaming entertainment.

In light of this, and to commemorate International Women’s Day, I’ve curated a list of valuable resources specifically tailored for individuals, especially women, aspiring to make their mark in esports gaming:

• ESA Foundation Scholarship Program: Designed for women and minority students in the US pursuing degrees related to computer science or video game arts.

• Women in Games WIGJ: A non-profit aiming to eliminate gender discrimination in the gaming industry and empower women to realize their full potential.

• IGDA Women in Games (WIG) Special Interest Group (SIG): Provides resources, community, and opportunities for those in the industry or those seeking to join.

• Black Girl Gamers: A supportive space for black women in gaming advocating for workplace diversity and inclusion, with numerous events and online platforms.

• The BroadcastHER Initiative: Aims to support women in content creation and gaming while addressing the gender disparity in financial support.

• Girls Who Code: A non-profit targeting the gender gap in tech, helping young women across the US, Canada, UK, and India to hone their computing skills.

• Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Gaming: In collaboration with Google’s Stadia platform, this scholarship supports North American students pursuing gaming degrees.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day, it’s paramount to recognize and celebrate the trailblazing women who have made indelible marks in the esports arena. Gaming can be a rewarding profession, and these ladies’ lasting mark in the industry is proof. Their passion, skill, and dedication have not only earned them accolades but have also paved the way for future generations of female gamers.

Scarlett (Sasha Hostyn): Often dubbed the “Queen of StarCraft II,” Scarlett has broken numerous barriers in the predominantly male-dominated world of competitive StarCraft. With her incredible gameplay and strategies, she’s not only won tournaments but also the hearts of countless fans worldwide.

Geguri (Kim Se-yeon): As the first female player in the Overwatch League, Geguri’s exceptional skills as a tank player have made her a force to be reckoned with. Her presence in the league is a testament to her prowess and a beacon of inspiration for aspiring female players.
